Last month, actress Angelina Jolie became known for more than just her pouty lips, superb acting skills and marriage to Brad Pitt. In an op-ed article published by the New York Times, Jolie announced that she had undergone a double mastectomy procedure after she learned that she is a carrier of the mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which dramatically increases her chances of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
The actress’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died from ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. Jolie is now age 37.
The actress’s procedure included three different stages: the first step increased the chance her nipple could be saved, the second step, done two weeks later, involved a major surgery where the breast tissue was removed and temporary fillers were put in place. Nine weeks post-op, Jolie underwent a breast reconstruction procedure.
