As if a mastectomy isn’t enough to deal with, many women develop a condition known as lymphedema following breast removal surgery. Lymphedema occurs when the lymph passages become blocked, causing chronic swelling and discomfort.
Could Your New Breasts Cut Your Risk For Lymphedema?
Lymphedema expert Cathy Kleinman-Barnett, interviewed by Plastic Surgery Practice (PSP) stated: “I definitely agree that radiation increases the risk for lymphedema. I have seen it so many times in my clinic.”
Despite this, there might be a way to reduce your risk of developing lymphedema after a mastectomy–and it’s something many women decide to do anyway.
A recent study shows that your risk for lymphedema could be cut in half, simply by having a breast reconstruction immediately following mastectomy. The study revealed that 19% of patients who elected not to have reconstruction immediately after surgery later developed lymphedema, while just 9% of reconstruction patients did.
Kleinman-Barnett comments on the findings: “The article certainly presents a good case for having reconstruction immediately following plastic surgery … It makes sense that people who do have reconstruction feel a greater sense of self-esteem and less depression, and are more likely to take precautions to prevent lymphedema and/or exacerbation of their condition,” she said.
