Plenty of women worldwide choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery to enhance their natural curves. Though breast augmentation procedures and breast implants are a fairly common surgery and have low risks, a new study published by the British Medical Journal shows that breast implants could make it more difficult for doctors to detect breast cancer during the early stages.

The Study’s Findings

The study says that the breast implants can obscure the breast tissue during a mammogram, making it harder for doctors to view the underlying tissue beneath the implant.

Despite what the studies find, Dr. Jennifer Walden, a U.S. plastic surgeon, told the media that the findings should be taken with a grain of salt. Walden reported that the study did not take age into consideration, didn’t examine the body mass index or the weight of the patients, which can confirm some added risk to diagnosing breast cancer.

Walden stated that proper placement of breast implants may even help with early breast cancer detection, because if the implant is placed behind the muscle, the tissue can be more visible during a mammogram.
