Breast implants seem like such a modern item that we can often gloss over the fact that they have actually been around for over a century.
Doctors have been experimenting with many different ways to enhance a woman’s breasts for years…with many trials and errors.
Thankfully, in the past decade, the art of breast enhancement has become even safer and more reliable than it once was.
As a team of highly-qualified New York plastic and cosmetic surgeons, we are well-trained and experienced in the most up-to-date forms of breast augmentation, including the no scar breast augmentation and endoscopic surgery.
Let’s take a look back for a moment, first, and see just how we got to this point in cosmetic breast surgery.
Early Medicine and the History of Breast Implants
The first recorded attempt at a breast enlargement was in the late 1800’s by Dr. Vincenz Czerny who was considered to be a pioneer in this field. He first experimented with taking types of body fat, called adipose tissue, from other areas of the body and inserting them into the breasts.
Other trials performed by Robert Gersuny involved injecting paraffin into a woman’s breast cavity. The results of this proved to be unsatisfactory as it led to lumps and infections.
Turn of the Century
Heading into the 1900’s, surgeons began trying things such as inserting ivory, ground rubber, and even glass balls. These led to complications as well and were soon abandoned.
The use of fat from other parts of the body like the stomach or thighs only led to the fat being reabsorbed into the body and, in a sense, reversing any kind of work that was done.
In the 1960’s, the use of silicone was introduced. They began with injecting it straight into the breasts but chronic inflammation and infection took it off of the market. It originated in Japan during World War II when Japanese prostitutes were attempting to attract the US soldiers. Because of its many health risks, however, it quickly became banned in the United States after its introduction.
The use of silicone today is quite different from the former, crude methods. Breast implants such as those offered by Mentor, Allergan, and Natrelle are completely sealed silicone gel inside of a silicone outer shell rather than an injection. This type of implant is FDA approved for safety and well-being.
Modern Day Breast Implants
Today there are three kinds of implants to choose from: saline, silicone gel, and saline cohesive gel (also called “gummy bear implants”). All types are encased in a secure silicone shell and inserted into the breast through a small incision made by the surgeon.
One of the biggest decisions to be made with breast implants today would be the shape of the implant. Standard profile, high profile, and teardrop profile implants all create a different shape and look for the breasts.
My patients can also choose to have a natural breast augmentation by having their own fat injected into their breasts in a method called “fat transfer”. This medical breakthrough allows for purified fat and adult stem cells from one part of the body to be grafted to the breasts where it will grow new fat and remain permanently.
