Types of Breast Implants Available
If you’re considering breast implants, you may not be aware that they come in a variety of sizes and shapes as well as materials they can be filled with. Implants are a way to get the exact-shape for achieving the breasts you’ve always wanted.
The majority of implants we use in our centers are Mentor breast implants because of their trusted reliability and safety. Mentor also provides an excellent warranty against breast implant rupture, should patients wish to purchase protection in their aesthetic investment.
Some breast implants come unfilled and can therefore be implanted using the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Team's no scar breast augmentation methods that they are specially trained to perform. See our article about Types of Incisions and No Scar Augmentations for more information.
Implants are measured in cc’s, a liquid measurement used by the medical field. To give you a better idea of what size a cc is: 5 cc’s is equivalent to a teaspoon of liquid.
Mentor Breast Implants to Choose in our Breast Enlargement New York Centers
This is one of the first decisions we will help you make when you visit our centers. Silicone is a synthetic material that has a very viscous (or thick) texture so that when placed in the breast, the breast implant will feel much more like real breast tissue.
For patients who have lost a breast (or breasts) to mastectomy, often times they will choose silicone to replace the breasts they lost to cancer. Studies have been done on silicone breast implants and these studies have shown that there is no greater risk to a woman’s health for choosing silicone implants versus saline.
Women who have silicone should pay special attention to even the slightest change in breast size, as this could mean a silicone breast implant rupture which means that silicone is likely leaking into the breast cavity.
Silicone breast implant ruptures are slow whereas saline ruptures are usually very sudden or take place over a few short hours. In either case, the situation must be remedied immediately with breast surgery.
Mentor breast implants made of saline are firmer than silicone breast implants because the implants are filled with water and have much less “give” when touched (they are firmer). This means a less natural feel as compared to silicone. However, the appearance of silicone versus saline breast implants is comparable to each other and there is very little difference between how the two look.
Saline implants are always slightly overfilled to avoid “rippling” or “sloshing” which can occur when an implant is left under filled or with an air pocket remaining inside.
Standard Profile Breast Implants
The standard profile implant is one of the most commonly selected shapes. This style of implant is evenly round in both height and width to provide the most realistically-shaped breast enhancement. The standard profile breast implant can be selected in a wide range of sizes to accommodate the most subtle augmentation or the most dramatic one.
High Profile Breast Implants
The high profile breast implant is greater in height than in width. When you set it on a table or counter top the breast implant is taller than a standard breast implant containing the same amount of cc’s inside. This type of implant results in a breast that projects outward from the body in a more pronounced manner than a standard profile breast implant.
Teardrop Breast Implants
The teardrop breast implant is in the shape of a tear drop and has a three-dimensional profile. The top portion of these types of Mentor breast implants are narrower than the bottom half and is ideal for women who need more breast volume in the lower half of their breast. For many patients, it simply comes down to desiring a more oblong shape with fullness from top to bottom rather than a rounder-shaped breast. Teardrop breast implants usually come pre-filled with silicone.
