Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular types of cosmetic procedures performed. Even though hundreds of thousands of women undergo breast enhancement each year, some of them can experience difficulties or problems with their new saline or silicone breast implants.
Before rushing into a breast augmentation, we want you to know about the potential risks of breast implants and what to do if an issue arises.
Breast Implants and Capsular Contracture
Women who receive breast implants in our New York breast surgery centers develop scar tissue that surrounds the implant. This scar capsule is formed around the implant inside of the breast cavity and is the body’s natural way of protecting itself from the foreign object.
Sometimes, however, this scar capsule can become too tight for the implant and result in capsular contracture.
Some of the symptoms of this complication include:
- Pain or tightening in the breast
- Breast feels firm or extremely hard
- Breast resembles a round ball
If you think that you are suffering from capsular contracture, it is very important to call your plastic surgeon immediately. This problem does not correct itself and usually requires breast surgery to remove the scar tissue capsule and, in some cases, the breast implant as well.
Unfilled breast implants that are filled with sterile saline solution during surgery can harbor bacteria. If your saline breast implant contains bacteria, mold, or fungus, it could cause an internal infection if it breaks.
The symptoms of a breast infection include:
You will have to contact your plastic surgeon immediately if you contract an infection. This requires urgent care and the removal of the ruptured breast implant in addition to antibiotics to help kill the infection.
Ruptured Breast Implants
If the silicone shell that helps contain the contents of your implant breaks or tears, then a rupture has occurred. Breast implant ruptures can be caused by daily stresses, a defect with the implant, or trauma to your breasts.
- Decreased breast size
- Pain or tenderness
- Changes in sensation
- Bruises or lumps
The best way to confirm a breast implant rupture has occurred is with digital imaging. If it has ruptured, you will need surgery to remove the implant. We are highly-qualified to perform this type of surgery to replace ruptured breast implants.
