Every year high school students across the country will receive graduation gifts such as jewelry, money, trips, picture frames, cameras, gift cards, cars… and breast implants?

Breast augmentation surgeon in NYC and Long Island NY discusses implants as graduation gifts. Risks for teens to consider. It’s true. More girls today have their sights set on a different kind of graduation present: cosmetic surgery (and breast augmentation, in particular).

While this has become something of a trend across the country, you should know that there are restrictions on the minimum age for breast augmentation, depending upon the materials used in the breast implants.

  • Saline implants are for patients aged 18 and older
  • Silicone gel implants can be done on patients who are 22 and older
  • Exceptions regarding age may be made for patients undergoing breast reconstruction

Age Considerations for Teen Breast Augmentation Patients

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), nearly nine-thousand teen patients aged 13-19 had breast augmentation from ASPS member surgeons in 2010.

Many of these patients were likely 18 and 19, some may have undergone breast augmentation for reconstructive and health-related purposes, and no doubt a few received their breast augmentation as a graduation present.

Some girls, particularly those who are unhappy with their breasts, see implants as a way to get a fresh, new start before heading off to college. However, we want to warn patients about the dangers of breast augmentation at young ages.

Risk Factors for Teens & Breast Augmentation

Surgery, in general, has risks regardless of age. For breast augmentation these include such risks as infection, adverse anesthesia reactions, implant rupture and leakage, capsular contracture, and other complications.

Implants are not intended to last a lifetime and generally last an average of ten years, which may result in several additional surgeries for younger patients in order to remove and/or replace the implants.

In addition, many girls continue to grow in the chest region well into their early twenties which may negatively alter the appearance of cosmetically-enhanced breasts.

The best advice we can give before either giving or receiving the gift of plastic surgery is to meet with us for a personal consultation to discuss the risks and benefits of breast augmentation.
