An estimated two million women in the United States have implants, with 250,000 to 340,000 women opting for other plastic surgery procedures each year.  It’s no wonder we are seeing so many turning to plastic surgery to enhance their natural beauty; it is safer and more affordable than ever before.

Should I Get Silicone or Saline Breast Implants?Should I Get Silicone or Saline Breast Implants? Answers from Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of NY in Manhattan and Long Island.

Breast implants are flexible silicone shells that are either filled with silicone or saline.  Silicone implants arrive sealed from the manufacturer whereas saline ones arrive either filled or unfilled.

The unfilled saline implants can be inserted through tiny incisions that leave virtually no scars.  If you’ve never heard of the no scar breast augmentation, ask us!

What If My Breast Implant Ruptures?

If your silicone implant ruptures, it will deflate at a much slower pace than a saline one.  If the silicone leaks out into your body, it can lead to health problems, both right away and even into the future.  It should be removed immediately if it is leaking.

Symptoms of a ruptured breast implant may include:

  • Change in the size or shape of your breast
  • Pain or burning
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding or bruising
  • Fever

It is important to contact your plastic surgeon right away if you think that your implant has ruptured so it can be removed.  In the case of a saline breast implant that has leaked, there could be mold, fungus, or bacteria inside.  You may already be feeling the effects of an infection in the breast or a systemic infection in the body.  Either way, it needs to be removed immediately.
