Every year, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reports on the number of breast implant procedures performed. They also report on the type of breast implants.
In 2012, ASAPS reported that breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States. There were over 330,000 women who received implants that year.
At that time, there were two types of implants: silicone gel breast implants and saline filled implants. The most popular implants were silicone gel (72% chose this type). Only 28% of procedures involved saline filled implants.
Popularity increased further when the FDA lifted the ban on them and allowed for cosmetic use, as further studies were released showing silicone implants were safe.
In 2013, silicone implants have become even more popular. In March, they made up three quarters of all total breast implant procedures performed.
Silicone Gel: Safe and More Like Natural Breasts
According to Vicki Koplow, interviewed by Huffpost Live, silicone breast implants look and feel more natural than saline implants.
After 25 years, she said they always felt natural, and it was only when she saw slight changes in them that she decided to have them replaced again with new silicone gel implants. She reported she would always choose silicone over saline.
Saline implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water, and silicone implants are silicone shells with medical grade silicone gel inside of them.
It was once believed silicone implants were not as safe because if they leaked they could be dangerous to a woman’s health. That’s why the FDA banned them. However, updated research that has come from more recent studies has shown that they are safe. Since they are more natural looking and softer to the touch than saline breast implants, they are currently the most popular choice.
Natural Breast with Natural Breast Augmentation
Another option for a larger bust may be natural breast augmentation using fat transfer. With this type of procedure, patients have fat removed from the buttocks, hips, thighs, waist, or abdominal area. The fat can then be purified and injected into the breasts over time (layered fat transfer). Since it’s the patient’s own fat, they are completely natural…just as if patients had always had that cup size.
